Anon

This is in honour of all those anonymous comments that are written by considerate and caring individuals who think we want to read their well penned gibberish and 'check out' their websites. I mean, they're not annoying at all - I just love spending my precious time moving them into spam and then deleting them - I have removed all the website links to save you, my true readers, from any distractions. In the meantime - to Anonymous - Thank you for commenting and taking the time to read my blog posts.

(Inbetween the lovely, thoughtful comments I've inserted photos of Vintage Vogue 8851)

The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone
and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop,
just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now broken and she has 83 views.
I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!

I am really impressed together with your writing talents and also with the layout on your weblog.
Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Anyway stay
up the excellent high quality writing, it's rare to see a great blog like this one today..

I may have to resort to the DcvrKLgtR 128806 coding system to filter out the spam comments but I've also been thinking about removing comments altogether. I do love to read your opinions and ideas and I find the real comments encouraging and inspiring; it's a wonderful way for us to build relationships.  I'm torn between the convenience of easy commenting and the ridiculous amount of drivel I'm receiving at the same time. Any ideas - not anonymous ones - please?

I did a small spelling mistake but I think I'll leave it up uncorrected

More than a Dress

The matching dress for the Chanel jacket is completed. What's brilliant about this dress is that it can be skirt and a pinafore too. Watch and be amazed....

Dress on its own = dress

blouse worn on top = skirt

Dress with jacket = suit

I made a matching belt, using two leftover buttons as a buckle. Just measure your waist and add a few inches for overlap: cut some interfacing to size to stabilise the fabric; mark buttonhole placement so that you can breathe comfortably: make button holes and sew on buttons.

Dress with shirt underneath = pinafore

Isn't that brilliant?

The pattern for the dress is Vogue Vintage V1137 (and as I write this Vogue are having a 48 hour $4.99 sale on all vintage patterns). This is the dress that goes with the opera coat.

No real major alterations done except that I lined the whole dress whereas the pattern only calls for the bodice to be lined. Seemed a bit silly to me to line half a dress. I didn't add the pockets.

There's a pretty little V at the back too but the shoulders do lie right on the edge of the natural shoulder and so ribbons to hold bra straps may be in order. Because the tweedy-boucle fabric was a bit bulky I sewed the zip in by hand. It's not invisible, but then the pattern doesn't call for an invisible zip - it being 1950 and all that.

SWAP '13 item number 2 from Audrey completed.
Was that a leopard I hear roaring?

Thanks to SG (And RuthieK)

Holiday Clothes Part 1

I've read, followed and took gratuitous advice over the years from Stitchers' Guild but only recently have I started to join in, share and reply. There is an absolutely overwhelming amount of information on this sewing forum but the links, personal communication and support have been invaluable recently - mostly from Ann Rowley's Chanel jacket make. However, RuthieK started a new thread the other day about boiled wool and it reminded me about a dress I made for Christmas two years ago - before I started blogging. I can't, therefore, display "work in progress" pics but I can show you the final item and a few details. I didn't wear this dress at all last year, so bringing it out again this year almost made it feel like new.
Fabric is not quite white but a pale ivory and I was concerned that it was too thick for a dress preferring to be made into a coat or jacket. But for a winter dress it turned out fine.  The boiled wool was purchased at my local fabric shop - Craftswoman Fabrics - and cost an arm and an leg per metre! There's 2m used here.

The pattern, I think, is McCall's 2401 - an easy, very basic dress with neck and sleeve variations. I wanted the v.expensive fabric to do the talking here, not the design. I like this simple dress as it has no cut-in-half waistline and can be as fitted or relaxed as you want. I made the V neck style but lengthened sleeves to 3/4 length.

Have I told you how much I love 3/4 sleeves? Shows off bangles and bling; don't have to push up when washing dishes and covers the upper arm - perfect in my book.

When making this dress, I seem to remember that it kept growing as I was sewing. I darted the fronts and back and then made bigger darts. With a bulky fabric, such big darts were not not going to be as svelte as I had envisaged. To over come the bulk, I sliced the darts open to within a hair's breadth of the ends and then topstitched the excess flat. This sort of created a design feature, while doing what I really wanted - smooth lines.

Boiled wool doesn't fray or unravel - a blessing but it does seem to stretch while working it. The neckline gapped and sagged when I kept trying the dress on, so there was nothing left to do but make more darts. I added four along the back edge, two long and two short and seemed to do the trick. If I remember correctly, there wasn't that much to take in, just enough to make the fit better.
The dress is fully lined in a slightly stretchy lining. For such a bulky fabric, it was see-through when worn and I still wear a slip underneath too.

Mince pie, anyone? (My Mum made these ones!)
The dress is still growing BTW. I love my food as evidenced by my womanly figure, and the frock fully accommodated my increasing midriff as the day progressed.

On the actual day - Christmas Day this year that is, I seem to remember more of this....

.... and in reality, I think this is how I looked most of the day - no-one saw the dress until 7.00pm! And by then they were all dozing and sated and didn't really care.

Come to that, neither did I.

Puritan Angles

Some lovely fabric arrived in the post the other day - wool and linen mix - very fine, almost cotton like. It is a pale washed out denim colour with white snubs. Wrinkles with the linen content but is soft with the wool. I'd ordered 3m and was keen to use it all in one go - one way of eliminating scraps! I'd worn Paco's half-circle skirt recently and had forgotten how lovely it is to have fabric swishing around so opted for a full skirted dress for the fabric. Only problem - don't have a pattern for a full skirted dress. OK OK really and truly this is the last dress - no really.
Undaunted, I patched up Paco's half-circle skirt pattern with the top half of McCall's Easy shift dress and cut out on the fold. Sorry Paco, I didn't cut bias.

I then took the front and the back, pinned them on Doris and then pinned in the darts to fit her.

The dress pattern has a centre back zip but I'd forgotten about this when cutting out on the fold - I was going for a side seam zip - so my darts on the back extend all the way to the neck. Note the acute angle of the back darts to fit my sway back.

Once fitted to Doris, I sewed the darts and the side seams and finished these off as the fabric frays like mad. It is also a little fine and see-through, so needed lining. but I didn't want to loose that swishy feeling of linen around my knees and made a shift-like slip that finishes just below the hips and is straight. I attached the lining to the neck facing and then sewed the facing as usual to the dress. I didn't line the sleeves, just stopped at the armhole and caught the lining in the seam.

There's always a problem though, isn't there?

Source

While beautifully fitted and finished this dress had puritan overtones - a little too prim and proper - no wow. A white bonnet on and no make-up and I could be Amish. Not quite what I had in mind.

Vogue
There was an idea hiding at the back of mind and while wasting time (project avoidance technique) on the internet the other day I had another look at Vogue's new patterns and fell on 1312. Sleeves, fitted bodice, full skirt - remind you of anything?

So I set my mind on how to alter the puritan's hemline.

I made hemline darts.

First, select your position for the darts. I have 8 on mine: two centre, two side and 2 in between. The centre hemline darts are longer than the others. The longer the darts the more exaggerated the effect.

Mark the centre of the dart, measure 4-6" either side of this and 4-6" up.   Fold along the centre line and stitch. Trim off the triangle and finish the raw edge. Press the living daylights out of the dart.

This is Doris wearing her new Puritan but darted hemline dress with her back to a mirror so you can see the effect. Points and shape to an otherwise plain dress.

There's a strange thing going on around here - me and Doris are becoming the same shape - she's putting on weight I'm sure of it. I'm off to compare measurements.

On a real person it looks like this...

And I can do a Vogue position too

It still has a swish factor and is just this side of slightly different as opposed to this, which won't really work too well in the classroom.

I'm now reconsidering the Vogue pattern. We'll see when the next sale is on.

Marianna, over at sew2pro is putting on a Japanese pattern magic book challenge. I'm thinking that these hemline darts are moving in that direction but tame in comparison to some of the ideas contained therein. Great, she's given me something to mull over, dwell on and have an excuse to sit around and stare into space.
